The full label
We printed the ingredient list from Aveeno's product page for Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion with Soothing Oat, read on Sep 30, 2026. The Amazon listing's ingredient text matches it word for word and in the same order.
Water, Glycerin, Distearyldimonium Chloride, Petrolatum, Isopropyl Palmitate, Cetyl Alcohol, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour, Dimethicone, Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Chloride
Marked = key ingredient discussed below10 ingredients listed
| Key ingredient | What it is | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Glycerin | Humectant | Second on the list. A review describes glycerol's role in hydrating the outer skin layer and supporting barrier function [2]. |
| Petrolatum | Occlusive emollient | Fourth on the list. A small human study found petrolatum spread through the outer skin layer, and barrier recovery after a lab-induced disruption was faster, not slower, at treated sites [3]. |
| Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour | Finely milled oat | The ingredient the brand is built around, listed seventh. A review by authors from the company that owned Aveeno at the time summarizes oat's water-holding starches and beta-glucan [4]. |
| Dimethicone | Silicone emollient | Eighth on the list; adds slip and a smooth finish. The label gives no percentage. |
What the evidence and the label claims say
The front of the bottle says "Fragrance Free" and "Normal – Dry | Sensitive Skin," and makes two brand claims: a stronger skin barrier and 48 hours of hydration. A round seal adds "Dermatologist Recommended Brand" and "Leader in Oat Science." The brand's product page summarizes the use as hydrating the skin and supporting its protective barrier [1]. These are Aveeno's statements; we have not seen the studies behind the 48-hour figure.
The ingredient list is short and plain. Glycerin is a humectant with a long research record, summarized in a British Journal of Dermatology review [2]. Petrolatum is the classic occlusive. A 1992 study in human volunteers, small and old but often cited, found it permeated the outer skin layer rather than sitting on top as a sealed film, and that barrier recovery at treated sites was faster rather than delayed [3]. Distearyldimonium chloride and cetyl alcohol help hold the emulsion together, isopropyl palmitate is an emollient, and benzyl alcohol is the preservative.
On the oat: the FDA's skin protectant rules list colloidal oatmeal as an active ingredient, at 0.007% minimum, for products labeled as skin protectants [5]. This lotion's current panel does not do that. It lists "Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour" as an ordinary ingredient, with no Drug Facts box and no stated amount. So the oat here is part of the formula, not a declared drug active, and nothing on the panel says how much is in it. The same rules list dimethicone as a skin protectant active at 1 to 30%, but here it is also just an ingredient without a percentage [5]. The oat review we cite was written by employees of the company that owned the brand then, so read its conclusions as industry-authored [4].
"Fragrance free" is the brand's claim, and the ingredient list backs it up: no "Fragrance" or "Parfum," and no essential oils. "Sensitive skin" and "dermatologist recommended" are marketing descriptions, not standardized terms.
Aveeno sells several near-identical bottles. On Sep 30, 2026 one back-label photo in this Amazon listing showed a different variant ("Sheer Hydration"), with a different ingredient list. Check that the bottle you receive prints the ten ingredients above. One section of the brand page also carries warning text worded like an over-the-counter drug label, even though its ingredient panel names no active. The National Library of Medicine's DailyMed database still holds an earlier registered version of Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion labeled as a skin protectant, with Drug Facts naming Dimethicone (1.2%) as the active ingredient [6], and the Amazon listing's details table also names dimethicone as an "active ingredient". Older stock may therefore carry a Drug Facts panel; read the panel on your own bottle.
Where it goes in a routine
This is an order of steps drawn from the label's brief directions, not a promise of results.
Shower or bathe first
Cleanse and pat skin mostly dry with a towel; the label does not ask for a specific wait.
Pump and spread
Apply over arms, legs and body. The directions say to use it daily, as often as desired, and give no set amount.
Keep it out of your eyes
The brand's warnings say it is for external use only and to keep it away from the eyes.
Sunscreen on exposed skin by day
The lotion has no SPF. In the morning, put a broad-spectrum sunscreen on any skin the sun will reach, after the lotion.
Price and where it is sold

Who should look elsewhere
- Anyone who has reacted to oat, petrolatum, benzyl alcohol or another listed ingredient before.
- Anyone who wants a thicker, cream-textured moisturizer: the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream entry covers a heavier face-and-body cream in a tub.
- Anyone shopping for the face specifically: this bottle is sold as a body lotion, and the brand makes separate face products.
